So what is quality sleep? Sleep is a state where awareness of environmental stimuli is reduced. We need sleep since it allows our body and mind to recharge while leaving us refreshed and alert when we wake up.

The Whole Health Organization (WHO) recommends that ages 6-12 years old should be receiving 9-12 hours of sleep per 24 hours. And 13-18 years old should be receiving 8-10 hours of sleep per 24 hours. While adults from the ages 18-60 years old should be receiving 7 or more hours of sleep per night.

Not having the proper amount of sleep can lead to certain diseases and medical conditions like:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Poor mental health
  • Early death

Having the recommended sleep can also help your body remain healthy and stave off diseases. It can:

  • Boost your immune system
  • Prevent weight gain
  • Strengthen your heart
  • Better mood
  • Improve memory

At the end of the day, a good night of sleep is just as important as eating healthy and exercising! You cannot achieve optimal whole health without taking care of your sleep.
