Types of Mood Disorder: Depression

Do you know the symptoms of depression are more common than you think?

Well feeling down at times is a normal part of your life. However, if you are constantly feeling down or hopeless, having difficulty sleeping at night, and thinking or talking slower than usual, then you may have depression.

Well everyone experiences depression in different ways. It could interfere with your daily work, giving you a hard time completing tasks and missing deadlines. Depression could also negatively influence your relationships and worsen some chronic diseases. Some may experience temporary episodes, while others may experience ongoing, lasting episodes.

About 1 in 10 U.S. adults have depression. There are two major types of depression - major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder is the most severe form of depression. One will feel a persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness.

Persistent depressive disorder is a milder but chronic form of depression. People with PDD may lose interest in daily activities, lose productivity, and have low self-esteem.

Don't ignore any symptoms of depression. If you think you may have depression, check with your healthcare provider to conduct a diagnosis. Your provider will likely ask you a series of questions about your mood, thoughts, sleep patterns, and activity level.

Depression may be prevented or treated with therapy, medication, and lifestyle behavior changes.

Here are some lifestyle habits to prevent depression:

  • Be physically active – physical activity like exercise, walking, or weight training can increase your body's production of endorphins, hormones that can improve your mood.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs - abusing alcohol and misusing drugs only makes depression symptoms worse in the long run.
  • And get enough quality sleep – Getting enough sleep is important to your overall health.
