The Relationship Between Cancer and Smoking

E-cigarettes and vapes have slowly become more popular amongst young people as manufacturers are advertising their products to be “better” than normal cigarettes. The fruity and sweet scents are also addicting and an incentive for them to try it. Here is the story of Paul.

Paul has a nicotine addiction and consumes a whole pack of cigarettes each day. Sometimes, he would smoke inside the house and expose his family to second hand smoking. His wife tries to convince him to quit for the sake of his health and their kid’s health. When Paul is frustrated, he turns to cigarettes because it helps boost his mood.

90% of lung cancer cases come from being exposed to tobacco smoke. Smokers think that smoking helps ease frustration and stress, but it actually causes anxiety and tension. Smoking actually puts you and the people around you at risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, lung cancer, diabetes, and stroke. Our lifestyle habits are directly connected to one another. By changing one bad habit, we are able to positively impact other areas of our lives and create a healthier lifestyle.

Paul can boost his mood by getting quality sleep every night and having a balanced meal for breakfast to provide him with the energy he needs for the day. Once his physical health has improved, he can work towards his mental and social health. Change doesn't happen overnight, but by slowly improving yourself daily, you will be able to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Chronic diseases – such as diabetes, cancer, asthma, and heart disease – are leading causes of death and disability. The Liu Foundation offers philanthropic The app and video series promoting evidence-based lifestyle habits to prevent chronic diseases.
